Biography

Dr Bruce is the Fellow and Director of Arup, leading City Advisory, Climate and Urban Sustainability services in East Asia. He has established a centre of excellence for climate modelling, making resilience quantifiable and actionable for organisations to plan for a net-zero future. With more than 20 years in the industry, he has led many high-profile and strategic projects such as advising top-tiered listed companies and city government on carbon neutrality and climate adaptation in various regions. His work also includes a super typhoon study for the South China region; advising on the TCFD; 3D city map production and a smart city district plan for Kowloon East – the first pilot area to explore the feasibility of developing a Smart City in Hong Kong. He has also supported international organizations such as the WB, IFC, ADB, AIIB, APEC, Resilient Cities Network (RCN) and Ellen MacArthur Foundation (EMF) on climate adaptation, sustainable infrastructure, carbon neutrality and circular economy. Bruce is a Cambridge Overseas Scholar and Research Fellow at Sydney University. Recently, he launched A4CR (the Asia Corporate Coalition for Climate Change Resilience), an Asia-based platform for companies, to drive a more climate resilience business community. Bruce is also a fellow of ICE, IET, CIBSE and HKIE in the engineering sector, as well as being committee members of various organisations such as the Director of HK Green Building Council (HKGBC), Chairman of Real Estate Working Group in the HK Green Finance Association (HKGFA), Vice Chairman of Real Estate & Infrastructure Committee of Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce (HKGCC), Committee Member of ESG Group of the Financial Service Development Council (FSDC), Working Group Member on Engineering & Climate Change of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO), using his knowledge to drive cross-sector collaboration, create values and generate momentum of change for the industry, example being the Smart Green Resilient framework which has now been adopted by all the strategic planning projects in HK.

Abstract

Many listed companies in the Asia-Pacific region have been experiencing amplified physical climate risk, as well as transition risk over the past few years. While the whole coastal area of Southeast Asia’s exposure to extreme climate events such as typhoons and flooding is well known, climate risk and opportunity have yet to be fully integrated into organizational-level decision making and aren’t priced in most of the time. This presentation will share how we are supporting our clients to assess and manage climate risks through quantitative and probabilistic-based approach, as well as the strategy of providing a stronger climate reporting aligning with international frameworks such as TCFD (Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures) as required by Stock Exchange of most key markets. Recent projects examples on climate risk assessments using geo-spatial and digital technology for asset management will also be shared.
